-
- The way I saw it Atari only got the market they did simply because of
- Jack's insistance to his tech team that they get a machine out first.
- The Amiga went through C='s usual marketing techniques ("we'll just let
- everyone guess we have a new machine!") and despite a wobbly start it
- still managed to beat the ST despite Jack's dirty tricks campaigns like
- the "Bouncing Ball Advert" at one of the US trade shows.
-
- For those who are unaware of this piece of Jacko skullduggery, Atari got
- a 520ST, an Amiga 1000 and a Mac and copied the bouncing ball demo onto the
- two machines that didn't have it. Then they put all three next to each
- other with price tags and said "which would you have?" Of course most
- people looked at how smooth the ST was and the price and said "I'll have
- one of those, please!"
-
- But the point of the bouncing ball demo was that it was a *sound* demo.
- Atari's demo was a lot smoother (it had no multi-tasking to worry about
- and was raster timed) but their sound was lousy. It was, according to
- Jeff Minter at the time, a "cornflake crunch" noise wheras the Amiga ball
- boomed around in full glorious stereo.
-
- But Atari had deliberately turned the sound down...
